The Social and Industrial Metaverse will meet in the middle
The Social Metaverse will be one in which you, as a person, would exist as a high fidelity, digital representation or virtual simulation or virtual reality representation of yourself. So you, John Smith, would have a virtual reality representation made possible with technologies such as AR, VR, enhanced facial recognition, digital facial constructions, face tracking, camera technologies, computer vision, and more. All with the end-purpose of creating a very lifelike avatar. And the interactions between these very lifelike avatars in a digital world and digital landscape would result in various different types of net new value propositions: virtual meetings, virtual concerts, virtual dates, virtual travel, virtual experiences, and more.
Value propositions in the digital world are endless, for example, in the digital world, you may need digital clothes, something that would seem rather unthinkable only a few years ago. In the digital world you would interact with other digital representations of people and would transact utilizing digital currencies (cryptocurrencies) to power a completely virtual economy.
In the Social Metaverse, the constituent building block that powers interactivity-based value propositions is the avatar - in the Industrial Metaverse the interactive constituent is the digital twin. The avatar and the digital twin both aim to achieve the same set of goals, to maximally encode real-world properties in the virtual world.
Social Metaverse, Industrial Metaverse & Use Cases
The Social Metaverse refers to the virtual shared space that is created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, and is intended for social interaction and communication. This includes virtual worlds and social networking platforms that allow users to connect and interact with one another in virtual environments.
On the other hand, the Industrial Metaverse refers to the use of the Metaverse in industrial and commercial contexts, such as in manufacturing, operations, and supply chain management. The Industrial Metaverse can be used to facilitate virtual collaboration, training, prototyping, design review, and other activities that are relevant to the operation and management of industrial and commercial organizations.
In general, the Social Metaverse is focused on facilitating social interaction and communication, while the Industrial Metaverse is focused on using the metaverse for specific business and operational purposes. Both types of Metaverse can make use of various technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), to enhance the user experience and enable new capabilities:
Virtual training and simulation
Virtual collaboration and meetings
Remote monitoring and maintenance
Virtual prototyping and design review
Virtual quality assurance and inspection
Virtual asset management and logistics
